At Studiomade we have launched a unique graphic design and art shop where the profit goes straight to those that have designed the work. Creating Risograph prints in-house and maintaining relationships with external suppliers for any screen printing requirements, we’ve launched with a small range of products with a plan for new additions in the near future.
Why do this? As an agency we believe passionately in the need for tangible brand experiences. Looking across other creative markets, we can see that the love of being connected to a physical product alongside and often in tandem with digital is not lost (Recording industry representative the IFPI reported as recently as 2015 how sales in LPs had grown due to consumer demand).
With our entrepreneurship hat on, we wanted to create an e-commerce platform where our team’s own work can sit alongside a collection from individual designers and artists as well as other studios and brands. It’s behind the scenes of the shop though that things are a little more unique.
Studiomade is taking on the initial production costs whether it be frames for screen printing or providing the stock and inks to Riso. Designers are therefore given a unique opportunity to produce and sell their own work without the risk of up-front set up costs whilst receiving profits directly from their own sales—at retail fees that they set.
Founder and Director Phil Reid said of the shop:
“The studio has come a long way since forming seven years ago and I’m really excited that the business is in a place that can allow this venture to happen. The aim of the shop is to encourage entrepreneurship, creativity and experimentation both internally within our own team but also through external collaboration.
There aren’t really any rules at this point; we’re not restricting the product listing and are open to including creative ideas that simply have to work within our Riso creation method. We’re really keen to get some collaborations on board whether with a brand, product, or other designers and artists outside our studio.”
